Things to Avoid
Even if you never mention the fact, it will be no secret to group members that you’re not paying out of pocket for your accommodations and diving. From their perspective, they are the ones paying your way to this tropical paradise — and you were the one who collected their hard-earned dollars to do so. It is not unreasonable to expect that they will want something in return.
This is why it is vital you dispel any notion that you are getting a free dive vacation at their expense.
Some things that you will especially want to avoid:
Putting your enjoyment above that of the customers This can manifest itself in a number of ways:
- Did you bring a camera with you? Why? If it was to capture everyone’s best memories and provide them with a souvenir of their adventure, that’s great. However, if it becomes apparent you’re there solely to build your personal slide or video collection, you’re going to create bad feelings. (Imagine telling a new diver that he or she can’t tag along with you because, “You’ll scare the fish away and ruin my pictures.”)
- Did the dive operator invite you and your handpicked cronies to accompany him on a “special” dive? Imagine how that will go over with the rest of your group, who now see themselves as being stuck on the cattle boat for yet another excursion to the Same Old Reef.
