Ongoing Group Leader
Responsibilities, Continued…
Conduct training as needed (but discretely) Many group members will have signed up for your trip with the specific goal of meeting the requirements for one or more levels of certification while on the trip. Most dive operations understand this and — because they want your repeat business — won’t give you a hard time about it. Be aware, however, that strictly speaking, you may be in violation of your host country’s laws by engaging in gainful employment without the benefit of a work permit.
- Few dive groups have had difficulty with this. Nevertheless, you may want to use some discretion in conducting your training activities.
- Make sure you do all the necessary paperwork and collect all training fees before the start of the trip.
- Don’t brag to dive operation staff members about how much money you’re making by conducting 97 different Specialty Diver courses in conjunction with the trip (they may perceive this as taking money out of their pockets — especially if they are locals).
- By the same token, don’t (loudly) encourage group members to sign up for additional training within earshot of local citizens.
Be a guide and mentor as needed Your group members will most likely possess diverse skill levels. Some will be experienced divers who are happiest if left to their own devices. The less-capable ones, however, may be counting on you to take them by the hand. And if this seems in any way to be an imposition, you’d best pay particular attention to the next two pages…
