Ongoing Group Leader Responsibilities

Once your group has arrived and checked in, your real work is just beginning. As group leader, you’ll be “on” 24 hours a day. You can (and should) be the first person group members come to with questions and problems. Things you can do to do a better job of fulfilling this responsibility include:

Obtain constant feedback from guests Don’t simply ask how things are going; people are conditioned to simply say “Fine” without thinking. Instead, ask more open-ended questions, such as:

Make certain you ask these questions of everybody in the group — not just the usual suspects who bask in your presence as though you were the Second Coming. Often, by doing so, you can identify and solve problem situations before they lead to bad feelings.

Let group members know to use you as their intermediary when dealing with the hotel and dive operation As group leader, you generally have more clout than group members do as individuals. Having group members come to you first is also one more way of identifying and solving problems before they become serious. It also helps reinforce the fact that, when customers travel on store-sponsored group trips, they travel with a personal ambassador who may get them better treatment than they are likely to get on their own.
