Rethinking Regulator
Recovery and Clearing

Odds are, you teach regulator recovery and clearing largely the same way I did when I began teaching scuba 30 years ago. You most likely preface your skill briefing with a “value” something like:

“In the unlikely event you lose your regulator under water, this skill will enable you to recover and clear it — even if it has fallen behind your shoulder…“

Regulator Recovery

In reality, you are teaching this skill primarily because it is an integral part of other important skills, such as air sharing, descents, etc. This is a good thing because, “in the unlikely event” our students actually have to recover a lost regulator in the course of an actual dive, what we’ve been teaching them for the past four decades may not be sufficient to allow them to survive.
