Rent or Provide?

The final survey question asked whether stores included the use of equipment for open-water training dives in their course fees or charged students a separate rental fee.

From the survey, there did not appear to be a discernable pattern which determined whether or not a store charges a separate fee for equipment rental to students in training. Factors such as regional differences, a history of how a store may have done things in the past and owner preferences all come into play.

• The logic generally given for charging a separate rental fee is that doing so helps promote equipment sales.
• The logic for including equipment use in course fees is that helps prevent the appearance that a store is charging a deceptively low price for diver training, then hitting students with numerous hidden fees.

Obviously, most stores appear to agree with the latter.
