On the Road Again
Our first stop was to be Atlantic Edge Dive Center in Gaithersburg, Maryland. However, we managed to get an earlier start than anticipated, and traffic was lighter than normal (a rarity for the DC area). As a result, we arrived in Gaithersburg an hour before the store opened.
Not wanting to waste any time, we continued north to Frederick, Maryland, and called on a store called the Brass Anchor. The owners of Brass Anchor were surprised that someone from the next state over would take the time to call on them, learn from their experience and share ideas in return.
As the Brass Anchor was not a member of the Mid-Atlantic Scuba Retailers Association, Scott took the time to bring them up to date on association activities and invite them to become involved. The basic message: There is strength in numbers; you are not alone.
For our next stop, we decided to go east and visit Columbia Scuba, just south of Baltimore. Columbia Scuba owner Bruce Farmer already knew Scott from association activities. This was Scott’s first visit to his store, however.
Columbia Scuba is located in an unusually beautiful setting, in a well-manicured corner location among single-story office and commercial buildings. Scott was impressed at how Bruce had managed to maximize use of his sales area, through innovative use of fixtures, storage and displays. The store did not appear the least bit crowded; however, there was a lot more merchandise on display than you often find in stores twice the size.
