Mr. Good Wrench

We’re not talking about the mythical GM mechanic, here — that’s Mr. Goodwrench (one word). No, what we’re talking about is that one absolutely perfect tool that makes servicing dive equipment a pleasure.

For me, that perfect tool is a Snap On wrench. My basic Snap On wrench set is over 30 years old. I didn’t buy them; I inherited them from my father. They are still in perfect condition. I have no doubt one of my kids will continue to use them after I’m gone.

If you’ve never used quality hand tools, you owe it to yourself to do so at least once. They just feel right. And even though they may cost more, they can pay for themselves in a variety of ways. To echo what was said in this issue’s Management column, quality tools:

Snap On is certainly not the only source of quality tools. There is also Mac Tools and Craftsman (the latter is good if you think you can’t justify $175 for a set of basic Snap On wrenches). Each of us is different; you want the tools that feel right for you.

If you are responsible for your store’s service department, you are no mere hobbyist. Your tools are how you put food on the table — and how you keep your customers’ life-support equipment in top condition. This fact alone justifies settling for nothing less than the best.
