“The” Dive Shop: In-House Done Right
Many readers are already familiar with “The” Dive Shop in Fairfax, Virginia — one of the east’s largest and best-known dive centers. Not surprisingly, “The” Dive Shop has a thriving in-house service and repair department, overseen by service manager Matt Harlan.
“The” Dive Shop’s service department has all of the things one might expect to see in a facility of this size, including:
- A large, well-lit work area, separate from the retail floor, that can be secured under lock and key when Matt isn’t present.
- An exhaustive collection of parts and tools.
- Ultrasonic baths, a flow bench, eddy-current tester and all of the other specialized equipment needed to service a wide variety of cylinders, regulators, BCs and other equipment.
One thing that is unique about “The” Dive Shop’s service department is that, while it is separate from the sales floor, it is nevertheless visible to customers, through floor-to-ceiling glass walls and doors. This is because “The” Dive Shop uses its service department as a sales tool.
When customers shop for regulators, BCs and computers, they are shown the service department and told about the value of the assembly and bench testing which comes with every equipment package — and about the importance and value of ongoing maintenance and warranty coverage.
