Additional Web 2.0 Apps
- EventBrite: Not counting classes and trips, how often does your store host events like seminars, socials and dives for which you need to know, ahead of time, not only how many are coming, but how to get in touch with them. EventBrite enables you to post events, allow participants to sign up on line and update them via e-mail. And, unlike any similar system you might put together yourself, EventBrite makes it easy for participants to share your event with others using Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, or to post your event to their on-line calendars. There is no charge to use EventBrite if your event is free. If you charge, EventBrite can collect the money for you (they get a small cut, of course). Learn more at EventBrite.com.
- LinkedIn: Where apps like Facebook are social-networking sites, LinkedIn is a business-networking site — a way for busy professionals to connect with one another in a serious, businesslike manner. As a dive retailer, you have contact with vendors, reps, training agencies and other suppliers. You may find LinkedIn a valuable tool in building professional relationships with them.
- MySpace: MySpace is a social-networking site similar to Facebook, and rose to prominence first. It has since become an also-ran. Jay Leno recently remarked, “Did you hear about the stupid criminal who boasted about a robbery he committed on his MySpace page? Can you believe that? That anyone still uses MySpace?” If your store has a MySpace page, fine. Otherwise, you might want to concentrate on Facebook first.
