Navigating With a Site Map
Among the utility links appearing on every page of your website should be one taking visitors to a site map page. A site map is nothing more than a listing of all the links on your website, in outline form. (Think of it as a Table of Contents for your website.)
Site maps accomplish a number of things, including:
- They provide an alternate means of navigation for visitors who cannot find the information they are seeking any other way.
- They enable your staff (who should be as knowledgeable about your website’s content as you are) to familiarize themselves with the entire website in the shortest possible time.
- They assist search engines such as Google and Yahoo! in indexing and cataloging your site, which may result in higher search engine rankings. See example.
