Signs with Borders

In the previous example, we used self-adhesive foam core for speed and ease. You can also use regular foam core and contact cement or spray adhesive to accomplish the same thing. (Doing so will be less expensive and may hold even better.)

This picture, taken at Gypsy Divers in Raleigh, North Carolina, shows an effect created by mounting a sign on a slightly larger piece of colored foam core. This creates a bright colored border and helps signs stand out from one another.

Easels

You can get self-adhesive, folding easels (or make the equivalent out of cardboard or foam core) and turn foam-core-mounted signs into free-standing counter displays. These come in handy when you need to post signs on shelves or adjacent to the cash register.

While it does not matter much what type of paper you print a sign on when putting it in an acrylic holder, signs you mount on foam core should be printed on glossy photo paper. By doing so, they will look better and last longer.

Foam core is not a universal solution to all your display signage needs. In the long run, it is much faster and easier to use acrylic sign holders whenever possible. Still, there are a number of situations in which it provides a more viable alternative and is a good thing to have in your display-signage bag of tricks.
