Foam Core in Action
Scott Evans of Adventure Scuba Company in Chantilly, Virginia, is fortunate enough to have a father-in-law who is both a talented graphic designer, and who enjoys making display signage for the store. Among his recent signs is the one shown in the accompanying photograph, which lists available regulator models and their prices.
- As you can see, even though the sign was printed on heavyweight photo paper, it still tends to curl and bend, as these signs do.
- Additionally, because of the sign’s final location, putting it in an acrylic sign holder was not an option, as glare from the overhead track lighting would have made it unreadable.
The solution was to mount the sign on foam core.
It's All About Imagination
If you’ve ever seen the larger-than-life displays at stores such as FAO Schwarz, you realize that there is more to display than just keeping shelves stocked and clean.
Display and merchandising are about firing the imagination — creating the impression that your store is a fun place to come and visit, at any time and for any reason.
It needn’t take a lot of money, as these photos testify. In the first example, Dave Farrar of Gypsy Divers in Raleigh, North Carolina, has turned simple pool toys into a colorful display that towers over his sales floor.
In the second example, Dave has created a sign post that points the way to popular dive destinations in the Caribbean and elsewhere. (It’s just one more reminder to customers that Dave’s store is their portal to escape and adventure.)
Just think about what you could do with a little time and imagination.
