Create Responsibilities
You can’t do it all yourself. Effective management is about creating and delegating responsibilities. This is as true of visual merchandising as it is of any other aspect of dive store operation. In doing so, you will find yourself creating lists of shared and individual responsibilities.
Among the shared responsibilities:
- Vacuuming, sweeping, dusting and polishing, as needed, whenever there is a lull in customer traffic.
- Re-stocking shelves, hooks, pegs and displays, as needed, to keep them looking perpetually full of merchandise.
Individual responsibilities you assign may include:
- Those assigned according to time of day: For example, there may be cleaning or re-stocking tasks associated with opening and closing the store.
- Those assigned according to talent or aptitude: You most likely have one or more staff members who excel in creating displays or making signs. Take advantage of this talent by making it part of these individuals’ job descriptions.
- Those assigned according to need: Do you anticipate a slow period? This may be a good time to assign one or more staff members the task of reorganizing the sales floor to help create the impression that there is “always something new” to see when people visit your store.
