Keep Shelves Looking Full
Imagine you are in your grocer’s produce section. In front of you are two displays of fresh fruit. One is brimming with bright, shiny apples; it looks, in fact, as though the display was stocked moments before you arrived. The other display is fairly picked over; there are empty spots and you are not really sure just how long these apples have been sitting around. Which of the two displays are you more likely to shop from?
For whatever reason, consumers seem to carry this behavior over into all types of retail shopping. This is why successful retailers ranging from Wal-Mart to the Disney Store make it a policy to always keep shelves looking full. Even when inventories are running low, they will bring merchandise to the front of the shelf (or display peg) in an effort to keep displays looking freshly stocked. You should, too.
Additionally:
- When you sell the last of an item, such as a mask, that normally has a sample displayed on a peg or hook, remove the hook and rearrange surrounding display samples to eliminate the vacant spot. Empty pegs and hooks not only make your displays look picked over, they convey to many shoppers a sense that “something is wrong.”
- If you have displays consisting of stacked items, keep re-organizing the stack as items sell so that it, too, never looks picked over.
In any ideal world, you’d never be out of stock on any of the items you normally carry. In the real world, that’s just not possible. Still, you don’t want your displays to disclose the fact there are holes in your inventory.
